I have always known that I was meant to help people, I just wasn't sure how.
Because I have struggled with my own health, I discovered the there are many options available in a person's healing journey. Until my early 20's, I was in and out of doctor's offices, seeing specialists, and taking more medications as my list of autoimmune disorders grew and grew. I was sick and highly symptomatic by the time I decided in desperation to seek out treatment with an acupuncturist. I was overweight, constantly cold, and physically exhausted all the time. My new acupuncturist did not treat me like my doctors had and during my first acupuncture treatment I cried I was so relieved and grateful. I had found a healthcare practitioner who listened to me, who didn't tell me to "try harder", and who cared how I felt. I knew then that being a healthcare practitioner should be an act of service and of loving care towards others. The very next month I moved to Austin to pursue my master's degree at AOMA Graduate School of Integrative Medicine. With the help of acupuncture, lifestyle, and diet changes I am now in remission for my autoimmune diseases (much to the surprise of my doctor after looking at my blood test results!).
I know the amazing potential of natural medicine and lifestyle management not just because I see it everyday in my practice, but because I have experienced it myself! I love that as an Functional Medicine and East Asian Medicine practitioner I get to connect with so many wonderful people in such a profound and meaningful way. And I really love how much relief and happiness my patients experience under my care. I truly believe I have the best job in the world!
Jessa’s Oath as a Physician of Traditional Chinese and Integrative Medicine:
I am happiest when I am serving others. I shall always honor that fact and wholeheartedly lend myself and my abilities to those around me whether doing so benefits me personally or not- friend or enemy, stranger or family, rich or poor, old or young.
I shall never become indifferent or lazy in my practice. I will always put forth my best effort for both myself and others to be as happy and healthy as possible.
I shall not focus my efforts on self-aggrandizing but rather on improving the lives of others around me to the best of my ability. In healing others, I may heal myself.
I shall care for myself in a way that keeps me in my best state to care for others. In healing myself, I may help to heal others.
I shall embody the best version of myself in mind, body, and spirit so that my patients and my peers may benefit from me and may aspire to embody these things as well. In this way we may all start to heal the world.
I shall ceaselessly continue to pursue knowledge, work diligently, and strive for the best version of myself as a person and as a practitioner so that I can better serve others.
I shall keep this oath to the best of abilities, fulfilling my responsibilities and my destiny as a physician to each patient that seeks my help until I am no longer able to do so. May I experience the joy that comes from helping others until the end of this lifetime.
